Radioiodine treatment as a treatment modality in amiodarone induced thyrotoxicosis: a case report

George Jyothis , Jayagopal Vijay

Introduction: About 3% of patients treated with amiodarone develop thyrotoxicosis (amiodarone induced thyrotoxicosis, AIT). Steroids and carbimazole are the main treatment options with surgical thyroidectomy performed in resistant cases. Radioiodine is believed to be unhelpful based on presumed poor radioiodine uptake by thyroid tissue saturated with iodine. We present a case of AIT with a low technetium uptake being successfully treated with radioiodine ablation.<p class=...

Is Vitamin D Toxicity inevitable without tighter regulation of over the counter sales?

Wiafe Eunice , S Kushe Manish , Gopalappa Jagannath , Jayagopal Vijay

Introduction: Vitamin D (Vit D) is required for maintaining optimal bone health and there is widespread campaign in the media for its use. There is however lack of awareness among the general public about therapeutic doses which if exceeded can result in harm. We present one such patient who was taking harmful quantities of vit D supplements procured over the internet which resulted in hypercalcaemia and renal failure.Case Description: 50year old lady, N...

Preoperative parathyroid imaging: a retrospective audit

Winfield Natalie , Kahal Hassan , Jayagopal Vijay , Agada Frank

Introduction: Preoperative ultrasonography or Sestamibi scanning (or both) of the parathyroid glands could facilitate a focused or minimally invasive surgical approach. In this audit, we wanted to find out whether one form of imaging is superior to the other in correctly identifying a parathyroid adenoma, later confirmed on histology. Methods: Data were collected from consecutive patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism, co...

Reversible apparent pulmonary fibrosis in severe hypothyroidism

George Jyothis , Thow Jonathan , Rodger Kirsty , Mannion Richard , Jayagopal Vijay

Context: Respiratory failure as a component of severe hypothyroidism has high mortality and a number of pathological mechanisms have been proposed. These range from cerebral causes to neuromuscualr and pulmonary factors. Changes due to mucopolysacharide deposition in the lungs is another postulated mechanism, but radiological changes are hitherto not clinically demonstrated. Objective: A case of hypothyroidism with hypoxia associated with CT features sugg...

Comparison of cardiovascular markers and variability of insulin resistance in women with anovulatory and ovulatory polycystic ovary syndrome

Cho Li Wei , Kilpatrick Eric , Keavil Brian , Jayagopal Vijay , Coady Anne Marie , Atkin Stephen

Objective: We aim to study whether a difference exists in cardiovascular risk and variability of IR within the hyperandrogenic group of women with PCOS who are ovulatory and anovulatory.Method: Fifty-three women with PCOS were recruited. All subjects were diagnosed to have PCOS by the ESHRE/ASRM Rotterdam criteria where all patients had evidence of biochemical hyperandrogenism and hirsutism, chronic anovulation and polycystic ovaries on transvaginal ultr...
